Gynaecological Cancer Awareness Month: Supporting Women’s Health

September is Gynaecological Cancer Awareness Month, an initiative aimed at increasing
awareness of cancers that affect the female reproductive system—including ovarian,
cervical, uterine, vaginal, and vulval cancers.

Why Awareness Matters

Every day, women in Australia are diagnosed with a gynaecological cancer. Early
recognition of symptoms and timely medical support can make a significant difference in
outcomes.

Symptoms to Look Out For
  • Abnormal vaginal bleeding or discharge
  • Pelvic or abdominal pain
  • Bloating or feeling full quickly
  • Changes in bowel or bladder
Prevention and Early Detection
  • Cervical Screening Tests (CSTs): Essential for women aged 25–74.
  • HPV vaccination: Protects against the virus responsible for most cervical cancers.
  • Regular GP check-ups: Especially if symptoms or family history are present.
